Printer (continued) Book III, Chapter 20, Section 2b Chapter 20, Item 77a Composing stick parts The parts of the composeing stick. The Head, the square end. The Bottom, that part where the holes are. The Back, that to which the shank of the letters rest, the side without holes. The lower sliding measure, or cheek, that next the Bottom. The vpper sliding measure or cheek. The male screw, the screw with a round head and a nick in it. The female screw, a square not lying with the vper sliding measure. The Holes. For the distributing of the Letters into their seuerall Boxes the Printers do generally obserue this rule: in the vpper case, the first halfe being all of an equal size, haue the letters thus place in the 7 rows of boxes.
The lower case, the Left hand halfe being equally diuided into 8 and 7 yet vnequally sized, by reason some boxes haue two parts of the 8 diuisons; that is, haue the Box as large as to containe two of the other Boxes, some to containe 4, and some 6 of the other Boxes, as thus. ot ----- æ, œ and e. hath the compasse of 2 in breadth and 3 in depth.
In the right hand box, they are in the first row of boxes thus placed. s. hath 2 boxes breadth, ssi. ffi. ffl.; sl. fl. i. hath 2 boxes deep 2 in breadth, s. 2 in deepth, f. the same, 8. the same, sh. the same, ss. ff. and si fi. vnder. o hath 2 deep 2 broad, y. 2 deep, p. 2 deep, w. 2 deep, v. 2 deep, ( ? [ 3 symbols] vnder. a. hath 2 in depth and breadth, r. the same, : & . = vnder [square] quadrats of all sorts in the corner box which is the compass of foure others of the 8 and 7 boxes. The Fram for these boxes or cases to ly sloping vpon, are made strong after the maner of a table fram, onely the feet on the hinder or opposite side must be higher then the fore feet, by a foot and 4 Inches. Whose seuerall parts are thus termed. The Feet or stiles, the foure vpright corner posts. The Bottom hind railes. The Bottom fore railes. The bottom end railes. The top Hind railes. The Top fore railes, against which the Bottom of the case rests. The Top end railes. The crosse Barrs, on which the cases ly: for the Frame must be made so long as to hold 3 higher and 3 lower cases, one for the Roman letters 2 for Italick, 3 for English or Black letters, and for the compositors better ease.
