Section III. Cuttlers Tooles.
From the Mettle founder let vs cast our eyes aside, and take a view of what Instruments and working Tooles belongs to the Cutler.


Half round burnisher
 21. In this square are three sorts of Instruments used by the Cutler in his way of work. The first is termed an halfe round Burnisher.


Silvering burnisher
 The second is a siluering Burnisher.


Crooked burnisher
 The Third is called a crooked Burnisher.


Marking iron
 22. In this square are three other tooles belong to the Furbisher, as first is the marking Iron; it is to marke and score the leather of scabards.


Hatching knife
 The second is termed an Hatching or Etching Knife.


Searing iron
 The third is a Scearing Iron, its use is to sceare, and melt the rosen and wax about the scabards.


Frubbing stick
 In this square is other two Instruments of a Furbisher. The first in chief is termed a Frubing Stick, or a Furbishing Stick.


Colouring stone
 The second is called a colouring, or Glasing ston.


Frubbing beam
 24. He beareth a Frubing Beam, or Furbishing Beam with its stirrup and Foot board. This is the Beam on which Cutlers polish and make bright and clean their sword blades; which are kept tight and fast vpon it, by strettening the stirrup with the weight of the workmans foot on the foot board. This frubing Beam hath these seuerall parts or members belonging to it.
The Bench Feet
The Bench or plank.
The two.
The cross Beam.
The Foot board, the board hung between the feet, by which the stirrup is made strett or slack.
The Stirrup, a long peece of leather that lies ouer the Beam and under the foot board.


Frubbing beam hook
 25. In this square is three things much used in the Cutlers trade the first is termed the Hook of the Frubing Beam, it is that as lyeth in the cheif.


Gleassier
 The second in the dexter base is called a Gleassier, it is a solid wheel made of wood and set on stands much after the nature of a Grindle Ston, and turned about with an Iron Winch: On this they Glease and made bright their Blades.


Varnishing oven
 That on the sinister base, is their Varnishing Oven.


Burnisher
 26. He beareth a Burnisher, or a Spur Burnisher.


Burnishing steel
 27. This is a cutlers Burnishing steele made round below on the edge, and wedged in a square hole made in a long peece of wood growing taper towards the ends, which are the handles to hold it by, when they are rubing any sword Blade to burnish it.
They use also seuerall other Tooles as Hamer, files , Raspes of diuers sizes, Pincers, Glew potts, Vice, and Punches seuerall, but these being more properly spoken to in other trades I leave them here, and referre you to them else where as they are in former chapters.
