At n.36. Adde these to chirurgions Instruments, ca.11. 12.


Head saw
 This is the forme of Dr. Salmons Head saw: the use is sometyme to give vent throw the Cranium, whereby the use of the Trepan is happily forborn. And some time a small rugged peece of the skull may so hang, that this instrument may be used to saw it away. se C.11. n.46. and 12. 9.


Cautery
 This Instrument is termed a Cautery for a Ranula; which is a desease or Tumour vnder the tongue which corrupts the speech: if it be any otherwise abated except by the burning Iron, it will grow againe. c.11 n.45.


Directory
 The Instrument called a Directory; it is a siluer probe, which must be soe bent, that its fissure or hallowness which it hath in the middle, as far as the end of it, may be on the back side, or Gibbous part thereof; it is thrust into the Yard, and doth most exactly shew the Neck of the Bladder; vpon which an Incision is made to take out the stone.


Dilator
 A Dilatory or a dilator: it is an Instrument used to enlarge a wound, when Arrow heads, Bullets, or the like, are to be taken out of the fleshy or Brawney parts. Se an other fashion of them ca.10. n.9.


Wound hook
 The Wound Hook: It is used in all such wounds where there may be some peeces of Link of a Chaine or Maile, or other like matter lodged therein, to pull them out. It is called the Hook Probe, and is used also in wounds made with Gun shot.


Terebellum
 This is an other forme of the Terebellum and contrary to that mentioned Cha.11 numb. 33. and is by some authors called the Terebellum of Hildanus, or Hildanus Wimble. It consists of three parts, the Piercer which hath a screw at the end to bring forth Bullets, or such like, out of a wound; which hath an handle at the other end to turn it about in the Inner case. The Inner case, which hath saw teeth at the bottom, that being fixed on the bullett holds it fast from turning while the piercer is screwing into it, and the outer case, which is smooth at bottom to goe into the wound to search forthe Bullet and not hurt the patient.


Scalpra
 The Scalpra or Scraping Toole; it is to scrape or shave bones with all, where there is occasion: of these Instruments there are severall bignesses, and of diverse fashions, and according to the use they are for, those for the head of one fashion, those for other bones of an other: now every Rasping Instrument is made of most pure steele, that it may have an edge that will perfectly rasp or scrap away. The auncients did fit proper hafts for euery scraping instrument but our Modern Artists provide one handle of Wood or Bone or Ivory, which they fasten to the Instrument by a screw. See c.11.40 and 12.3


Head Scalpra
 The Hooklike Scalpra, or Head Scalpra, without an Handle.


File
 A File, this is a flatt and thin Instrument, and is used commonly for the cleansing smoothing and makeing euen the teeth.


Plyers
 The Plyers; it is an Instrument to take hold of any small thing, it will take out an Arrow head in a wound, or the head of any weapon that is hollow, for the shanks being diuided in that hollowness will hold the Arrow head firm and fast and so draw it out.


Screw plyers
 The Pliers with a screw. It is an Instrument haueing a screw runing through its handles, or cross its shanks, the end are in some sharp, and others like the crows bill, or a little flatter. The screw doth open or close the beaks or points as you please to take hold of the head of the weapon, though it be buried in the flesh.


Hooks
 These are Hooks screwed and to be screwed into Handles, which are made of various fashions according to the use and place of application: but are neuer to be used unless the child be dead; nor then if Nature be able to expell, as many tymes she is. Se ch.12 n.30.


Instrument
 An Instrument to be put into an handle to press down the Dura Mater; it is used after Trepanning of the scull, as often as you dress the wound: wherein pressing it down to the Dura Mater, that so the matter may more easily be evacuated. This Instrument must haue the end round, smooth and polished.


Cataract needle
 The cataract needle, or a needle for couching cataracts; they are often made of siluer, but those made of steel are much better; they are commonly kept in a box of siluer, and fixt in an Handle of Siluer:
a. the siluer case.
b. the needle fast and case of siluer.
c. the needle as it is fitted for the cure of the cataract (see cha.9. 185. 192) or suffusion.
d. the capsula or cover of the same being put into the case.


Scraping levitory
 The Hollow scraping Levatorie. It is of singular use after Trepanning to take away the splinters and take away the inward edges of the scull, least the little bits or splints should hurt or prick any of the membranes; it is smooth on the out side and hollow within, that it may receiue and hold whatsoeuer it shaves off, from falling vpon the membrane. se c.11. n.33.
