Bows and flags Book III, Chapter 18, Section 2a Chapter 18, Item 15a Regimental ensigns How Ensignes in a Regiment are distinguished. The Banner of an Emperor is to be 2 yards square. The Banner of a King, to be fiue foote square. The Banner of a Prince, and Duke, foure foote square. The Marquesse, the Earle, the Viscount, the Baron, and a Bannerett, and Barronett, shall haue their Banners but 3 foot square; this was the old forme, yet some hold that the Banner of a Bannerett shalbe but 2 foot square, and so was the old form: but now because of their worship and power is increased, they haue it to their feete [sic]. Vnder the Banner Royall, or Royall Ensigne is 1500 men to be placed and conducted; all other inferior banners to haue under them but 100 or 120 souldiers. Back to Text & Pictures Chapter 18, Item 16a Cornet Things pertaineing to a Cornett Banner. The Cornett or horse banner is generally fringed about the tassells and strings. The head and sockett into which it is screwed. The Cornett staffe to the side whereof is fired. The Rod of Iron, and ring, by which it is supported, called also the Runner. The Cornett staffe sockett, is a black round Leather case hung in a leather girdle to the horse side to rest the end of the cornett staffe in to hold it vpright. The cornett belt or girdle to goe ouer the colour bearers shoulder. The swivell and spring - - - [sic] to take hold on the ring. Back to Text & Pictures Chapter 18, Item 16b Standard lengths Standards are for Armyes to march and fight vnder, but ensignes and pennons and Banners for particular squadrons, regements and companyes; and so we haue it set forth by a command of God himselfe Numb.2. 2. &c. Now the standard is knowne from the person by its length and by haueing a long slitt vp the end of it. The standard of a Prince or Duke is to be slit in the end and to haue the crosse of St. George, the crest and motto, of the owner (as all standards haue) and to be seauen yards long. The Marquesses standard to be of the like fashion and to be 6 yards in length and a halfe. The Earles standard is to be 6 yards long The Viscount standard is to be 5 yards long. The Barons standard to be the same 5 yards long. The Bannerets standard to be 4 yards and a halfe. The Baronett and Knight to be 4 yards long. Back to Text & Pictures
